So Monday, I was walking to the elevator at work - it's only two stories but I always take the elevator down when I'm wearing heels because I almost bit it on the stairs once. - so anyway, I was halfway to the elevator and my heel slipped. I stumbled to the wall, trying to catch myself and ended up face down on the floor laying flat. I rolled to a sitting position and the top of my foot stung. It was already swelling up. A couple of students and the facilities manager helped me get into a chair, wrapped and iced my foot. About a painful hour and a half later I decided I had to go to the doctor to check it out. Four X-rays and a wheel chair ride later, the doctor said she thought I had a fracture in my foot - and that I had to stay off of it completely until I saw her again - today! Wednesday I had CT scan to confirm if it's broken. My job is to keep the weight off, ice it and try to get the swelling down. Well, today I found out the fate of my foot. I went to the doctor and she looked at the CT scan and, while out of the room, called Dr. V, a specialist. He happened to have a cancellation and I was quickly sent over to his office. (As quickly has I could hop.) They looked at my CT, took more x-rays and gave me the news. I was lucky enough to break two bones in the lisfranc region. (AKA the part you should NEVER break.) So my foot is unstable and will potentially heal deformed IF I don't get surgery. So Monday, I am going in at the butt crack of the morning (5:30 a.m.) to have screws put into my foot. Then I'll be in a cast for several weeks. After that, no weight on it or driving for three months. (I KNOW!) I don't know how I'm going to get around to work yet. So I'm off work next week too. Today I went and rented a wheely walker because if I can't put weight on that foot for three months I do not want to use a walker the whole time. Geesh. It's hard enough keeping it elevated. That's all the news that is news right now. http://www.aafp.org/afp/980700ap/burroug h.html Tags: break, fall, foot, surgery Mood: sore

I was listening to Weekday this morning on KUOW and learned something new about Seattle. I've been here for 8 years, and in that time I have not seen as much snow as I saw this winter. I've known, from my first winter here, that snow freaks people out. This year Seattle was in horrible shape for weeks thus "ruining retail shopping opportunities for an already stressed retail district." (Joni Balter, Seattle Times or Joel Connelly from the Seattle PI - I can't remember who said it.) Anyway that is not what I learned. What I learned was WHY when they plowed the roads they didn't use salt. I'm from Michigan. We use salt and sand in all of our plow equipment. There is no point in plowing if you are not going to salt. (At least, the Michigander in me thinks that.) Apparently, Gov Schell passed some legislation when he was in office that there should be no salt. Apparently because of environmental reasons. Joni also said that the plow heads were rubber tipped. (!) Which explains why the snow was packed down and not removed. The whole article gave me a clear understanding of why the roads were so bad for so long....but also - why it's a bad idea to have those raised pucks on the road. Proper plow equipment would scrape all those reflectors and white divider pucks right off....you just can't win! I remember when I first moved to Washington...I thought it was so crazy that they spent all that extra money on plastic, raised pucks instead of just using paint. Of course, if they just used paint they could plow....but then something would be lost with out the pucks. Here's a link to the Weekday story if you want to listen for yourself. A Musing on 2009 Local Politics was the name in case the links updates to the current day's weekday. That's all.... -Edit - I added this picture of candy dots because mysticalforest said that's what he used to call'em (see comments). I agree! Except ours are white.
